Abstract

The hermeneutic research that begins in Truth and Method(1960) makes explicit the tension that has been established historically between the scientific method and the ‘sciences of the spirit’. The little self-understanding that ‘sciences of the spirit’ have of themselves and their resistance to the universality claim of the scientific method of natural sciences poses a problem to philosophy since it is in this area where the following questions are discussed: what is knowledge? what is truth? Philosophical hermeneutics aims to deal with this problem by legitimising other forms of experience outside from scientific knowledge which fall under the scope of the "sciences of the spirit”. For this reason, H.G. Gadamer assures that these "sciences" are a kind of truth. However, a detailed statement does not appear in Truth and Methodnor a definition that gives account of the kind of truth it is. For this reason, to elucidate what H.G. Gadamer understands as truth, we propose, as a hypothesis, an approach to the notion of truth as alétheia by M. Heidegger, exposed in the text Of the Essence of Truth(1931-2), to clarify the notion of truth of H.G. Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics.
