This paper argues that the notion of governmental rationality articulated by Michel Foucault may have been influenced by the work of the Frankfurt School, particularly by Herbert Marcuse, around the relationship between power and rationality. The argumentation is built on the basis of a genealogical analysis of the concept of rationality in the context of capitalism and it concludes with a reflection on the methodological contributions to the governmentality approach that may be explored from the intellectual relationship between Foucault and Critical Theory.
